UGC JRF Financial Assistance to Scholar
UGC Junior Research Fellowship initial for two years, fellows receive a stipend of Rs. 35,000 per month as JRFs. If their research progresses satisfactorily, they are promoted to Senior Research Fellows (SRFs) for the remaining tenure, receiving Rs. 42,000 per month. In addition to the fellowship, scholars in Humanities and Social Sciences are granted a contingency fund of Rs. 10,000 per annum during the JRF period, which increases to Rs. 20,500 per annum once they become SRFs. For Science students, the contingency fund is Rs. 12,000 per year as JRFs, rising to Rs. 25,000 per year as SRFs and House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per the City Group (A, B and C).
Procedure for Applying for the Scheme (JRF)
Eligibility to apply for the fellowship under this scheme is restricted to candidates who have qualified the joint NET/UGC-CSIR tests. These qualified individuals must submit their applications in response to the advertisements published by universities, institutions, or colleges that are recognized under the following provisions:
(i) Section 2(f) and Section 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956;
(ii) Grant-in-aid Deemed Universities as per Section 3;
(iii) Universities or institutions funded by the State or Central Government; and
(iv) Institutions of National Importance.
Joining in JRF Fellowship & Registration in Ph.D
Candidates are obligated to accept the fellowship within a period of six months following the issuance of the award letter. For those who are already registered in a Ph.D. or M.Phil. program, the fellowship will take effect from the announcement of the UGC NET-JRF or CSIR-UGC-NET-JRF results, depending on which is relevant. Conversely, for candidates who have not yet been registered or admitted to a Ph.D. or M.Phil. program, the fellowship will commence on the date they begin their role as a research fellow in the M.Phil. or Ph.D. program. The fellowship is granted for a duration of five years, starting from the date it officially begins.
Procedure for release of grants by the UGC JRF Grant
1. Joining: The UGC office will recognize the Fellow’s candidature upon the submission of the Joining Report in the required format (Annexure II) and the eligibility certificate from the relevant university or institution. Following this, the first installment of permissible grants will be released to the individual JRFs in line with the prescribed norms.
2. Continuation Certificate: At the end of every three-month interval, a ‘Continuation Certificate’ should be provided in accordance with the prescribed format detailed in Annexure-III. This document will ensure the fellow’s eligibility to obtain the fellowship for the following three months.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, communicated via letter D.No. No18-7/2013-U1A on June 10, 2016, that the University Grants Commission is to ensure that Aadhar is a compulsory requirement for the disbursement of all Government subsidies, scholarships, and fellowships.
